Delivering Energy

Africa’s rapidly emerging middle class are hampered by a lack of choice when it comes to household energy. Over 80% of Africa’s 400 million city-dwellers still rely on charcoal – dirty, environmentally destructive, and a major cause of indoor and outdoor pollution.

Urban households want a modern, clean, convenient and affordable cooking solution
CleanStar is rolling out a safe, quick and high-quality cooking solution that empowers working women from rising households to do more. An ethanol-based cook stove is retailed along with bottled liquid cooking fuel, through the Company’s growing distribution network in Maputo.

Our customers value the time savings, cleanliness and affordability of the clean cooking solution. Having lived through the exponential price inflation associated with charcoal in recent years, they are actively looking to transition to a more efficient cooking technology in their homes.

Charcoal is financially unsustainable
Charcoal is also increasingly expensive. The price of charcoal is directly linked to the size of cities, the distance to exploitable indigenous forests, and the price of the diesel required to transport it. Relentlessly, the cost of charcoal to urban households climbs upwards as cities expand and the forests retreat. Alternatives to charcoal are now economically viable.
