Cultivating

Cultivation

CleanStar Mozambique helps smallholder farmers implement agroforestry cultivation systems and reforestation belts on their own land. We provide improved planting material, strong and ongoing technical expertise through a network of employed agroforestry technicians, and operate community-based infrastructure for buying, storing and processing agricultural surpluses.

Partnering with local communities
CleanStar Mozambique has intentionally pursued a smallholderbased cultivation strategy after evaluating the risks, costs and impact involved with a range of alternatives.

This strategy is not intended to be the most efficient or profitable method of producing a certain commodity or group of commodities. The business is not about the commodities in isolation. Rather, it’s about the systemic interaction between rural communities, land, forests and urban consumers that is involved in producing food and energy commodities. That system is largely broken in Mozambique, and creating a worsening lose-lose situation for all.

By working with the existing primary producers in the system – smallholder farmers – CleanStar Mozambique is creating a highly scalable system for delivering compelling wins for all stakeholders.
